“Good quality relationships not only give our lives meaning, but couple, family and social relationships hold they keys to children’s educational attainment, child and adult mental health and well-being, parenting, quality of life for people in later life and preventing crime and anti-social behaviour.” (Dr. David Marjoribanks)
Ag Eisteacht is delighted to continue our work with teachers this summer in Cork City, Dunmanway and Laois with our DES approved ABLE4Teachers Summer Course from July 2nd – 6th. Since 2016 our trainers have been delivering this training to principals, teachers and SNA’s. In 2017, 94% of participants said they would recommend the course to a colleague and the vast majority said they would use the model daily or weekly.
Our course is custom designed to assist teachers in actively fostering relational wellbeing in the school community. We want to help teachers feel more confident, informed and ABLE to frame and offer time, attention and respect, in response to a parent or colleague who is stressed or wants to talk.
Positive and healthy relationships are essential at all levels of the school community. It is important to have a supportive environment for teachers, pupils and their parents/guardians for personal health and well-being. According to the report ‘Well-being in Post Primary Schools – Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention’, the well-being and mental health of a young person is improved when their school and parents or guardians are all working together. A young person’s primary influence is their family, so it is important for teachers and parents/guardians to form sound relationships. According to this report;
“It is clear that a sense of belonging and good relationships within the school community foster feelings of wellbeing… The Health Promoting Schools’ programmes and research emphasise the significance of holistic educational experiences for students, so that it is not sufficient to teach ‘about’ good relationships and respect; this needs to be modelled and experienced in the school community.”
