Today, October 10th is World Mental Health Day which marks the beginning of Mental Health Week. “The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day (WMHD) on 10 October every year as an opportunity to raise “awareness of mental health issues around the world” (Seechange.ie, 2016)
The theme for this year’s WMHD is ‘psychological first aid’ which discusses the various supports people can provide for those in distress.
Here at Ag Eisteacht our relational based training focusses on the process of Active Listening which is hugely effective in providing support for anyone who may be distressed. To be listened to by a non-judgmental ear can be invaluable for people who are experiencing mental health difficulties. It can often be tempting to jump straight into ‘fixing’ mode when someone comes to us with an issue, whereas simply listening with undivided attention and understanding what’s really going on is far more beneficial.
We’re delighted to support this fantastic initiative. We will be actively supporting the hashtag #glitch on Twitter, and keeping up to date on the various events happening around the country this week which can be found here.
